Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter hits and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, a lot of them can be traced back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not addressed, your system could suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself a bit of time to look through and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be spent on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system might be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any odd dings coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises near the end of their life. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing cool air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home efficiently. Your home could start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies might notice increased symptoms. Some other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
